A Ugandan Pastor is currently being detained at the police station following an incident where he was seen flogging church members. The self proclaimed prophet was arraigned in court and charged with assault and human traffic.
Prophet Kintu Dennis of Hoima Empowerment Church International was seen in a widely shared online video whipping members of his church. The man of God was arrested along with other four members of his church.
The five are being held at Hoima central Division Headquarters. Police found three sticks it suspects were used by Prophet Denis Kintu to lash the church members.
Pastor Kintu was recorded ordering church officials to go to the front of the church to be whipped or stop attending prayers and lose the privilege of handling his microphone.
The congregation watched as the ushers received their beating as soft piano music played on the background.
The Pastor was summoned by the District security committee headed by the Resident City Commissioner Mr Badru Mugabi and upon interrogation, he told the committee that what he did was only a demonstration of how Jesus treated those he found selling goods in church.
The committee also established that the church is operating illegally without clear documents from the City Authority or Uganda Registration Standards Bureau.
A search carried out in his church found three sticks that police alleged were being used to cane members of his congregation.
Police has called upon the Uganda Human Rights Commission to pick interest in the conduct of such self-proclaimed prophets who are allegedly abusing the right to serve God with impunity.
The Pastor has been remanded in police cell until 7 September, awaiting court rulling.
